The origins of Father’s Day date back to the early 1900s. Inspired by the success of Mother’s Day, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Her efforts led to the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910.
Over the following decades, the holiday gained national recognition. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day, and in 1972, Richard Nixon signed legislation making it a permanent national holiday.
