Heather’s journey with VNA of the Treasure Coast began after she injured her back while lifting a heavy bucket of water. When her pain persisted, an MRI revealed a compression fracture along with signs of previous spinal damage. To help stabilize the fracture and relieve her discomfort, Heather underwent a kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive procedure that restores stability to a fractured vertebra by injecting medical-grade bone cement into the affected area.
After completing rehabilitation at an outpatient facility, Heather turned to the VNA. For one month, she received physical therapy, occupational therapy, and home health aide services.
Heather’s care team included Physical Therapists Cynthia, Tim, and Kristen, along with Occupational Therapist Amanda, who each played an important role in her recovery. During her physical therapy visits, Heather focused on rebuilding her strength, improving her balance, and becoming more confident with everyday movements.
Heather’s physical therapists practiced walking up and down the stairs, completed seated exercises, and worked on strengthening exercises at the kitchen sink. Heather appreciated having someone by her side to encourage her and keep her accountable throughout the recovery process.
“It’s much easier when you have someone to do the exercises with,” Heather said.
Having her physical therapists there to guide her through each exercise kept Heather motivated and helped her continue working toward her goals between visits.
Amanda, her occupational therapist, focused on helping Heather safely navigate everyday activities as she recovered. Through occupational therapy, Heather learned practical techniques to make daily tasks easier and safer while maintaining as much independence as possible.
In addition to therapy, Heather received support from VNA Home Health Aide Gloria, who quickly became one of her favorite members of her care team. Gloria helped Heather with bathing and provided the extra assistance she needed while recovering. She also went above and beyond by changing Heather’s bed sheets, a simple gesture that made a meaningful difference.
“I loved Gloria’s manner and how she talked to me,” Heather said. “She made me feel comfortable. She was very friendly.”
For Heather, the compassion and positivity each team member brought into her home made the experience truly special.
“I looked forward to them coming,” she said. “Everyone was so friendly and cheerful. I can’t say enough. I had a lot of friends and company that came over while I was recovering, but I always looked forward to their care and spending time with them.”
While Heather still has a few months left in her recovery, she looks back on her time with the VNA with gratitude. The exercises and therapy helped her regain strength, but it was the encouragement, kindness, and genuine care from her team that made the biggest impression.
“If anyone is considering home healthcare, I’d definitely recommend the VNA,” she said.
