Breast cancer affects more than the person receiving a diagnosis. It can impact families, daily routines, and nearly every part of life. Having the right support can make a meaningful difference, especially when care is needed at home.
At VNA of the Treasure Coast, cancer is part of the care we provide. Our team cares for patients throughout different stages of their cancer journey, providing compassionate support tailored to their individual needs.
While not every case of breast cancer can be prevented, there are steps people can take to lower their risk and improve the chances of finding breast cancer early. Staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, and knowing your family history can all contribute to better breast health. Talking with your healthcare provider about your personal risk can also help determine when you should begin screenings.
When Should You Get a Mammogram?
For women at average risk of breast cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends:
- Ages 40–44: Women have the option to begin annual mammograms.
- Ages 45–54: Women should have a mammogram every year.
- Age 55 and older: Women can continue with yearly mammograms or switch to every other year, as long as they remain in good health and choose to continue screening.
Women who have a higher risk of breast cancer because of family history, genetic mutations, or other factors may need to begin screening earlier or have additional testing. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screening schedule that is right for you.
Mammograms can detect breast cancer before symptoms appear. It is also important to speak with your healthcare provider if you notice changes such as a new lump, swelling, changes in the appearance of the breast or nipple, skin changes, or unusual discharge.
Supporting Patients at Home
For someone living with cancer, care often involves much more than medical treatment. Patients may need help managing medications, symptoms, nutrition, mobility, personal care, or changes in their everyday routines.
VNA of the Treasure Coast provides care in the comfort of the patient’s home, helping patients maintain their independence and quality of life whenever possible. Our team works closely with patients and families to provide the support they need throughout their care.
For those receiving hospice care, the focus is on comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Our hospice team also provides support for family members and caregivers, helping them navigate what can be an incredibly difficult time.
Now is the time to focus on your health, understand your risk, and stay up to date with recommended screenings. Early detection matters, and knowing when to get screened is an important part of taking care of yourself. For those living with cancer, VNA of the Treasure Coast is here to provide compassionate care and support no matter where you are in your journey.
